Norman Grave CoverLet me first take you back into the south porch where you enter the church.

Here you will see evidence of the Norman church which stood on this site

before the present building. A 12th century grave cover has a pair of

shears carved on it showing the importance of the wool trade even in these

early times.

 

Norman Chevrons

Come back into the church and walk across to the North wall opposite you. The wall you see  to the left of the North door is what used to be the outside wall of this Norman church. The simple style of windows in this part of the church are from about 1290. Look carefully at the wall to find the early Norman stones, carved with a chevron pattern, which were reused by the masons.
