Choirs

Picture of the Choir

The senior choir, of boys, girls, and adults, is actively committed to a variety of activities; it has recently sung on BBC Television, and has undertaken recent visits to Cathedrals in Liverpool, Ripon, and York. It also sings at all main Sunday services and on major festivals. Junior Boys practice is on Tuesdays 7 - 8pm. The Halifax 900 Choir, for junior girls also sings at the main Sunday morning service and on other special occasions. Practices are on Tuesdays 7 - 8pm.

We have a limited number of vacancies each year for Choristers, girls and boys, aged between 7 and 16 years. There is a long musical tradition at the Parish Church and we are looking for young people who enjoy singing, and who are not currently involved in the life of another Church. Voice trials can be arranged by appointment, but you are always welcome to come down to Church on any Tuesday at 7pm.

What the Choirs Offer

Educational Benefits.

Previous singing experience is not essential. If your child joined either the Parish Choir or the Halifax 900 Choir, he/she would receive the necessary voice training and, with more experience, extensive musical knowledge: e.g. musical notation and theory, sight-reading, voice projection, as well as an appreciation of secular and sacred music. As well as musical knowledge and experience, choristers are encouraged to develop in their reading skills and in their understanding of history and RE.

The Choirs are affiliated to the Royal School of Church Music. Choristers are given a set of attainment targets and each level is marked by the award of a badge. The 'Voice for Life' scheme gives plenty of scope for development and interest.

Personal Formation.

Membership of both choirs involves responsibility, teamwork and commitment. The Choristers are  encouraged to take pride in their musical gifts and to meet their full potential. They are also paid for the time, effort and professionalism they bring to the music of the Church.

There is a serious side to being a chorister, but we try to ensure they have lots of fun. Each Sunday night, during term time, there is a Choir Club which includes Indoor Football. The young people of the church go away on a weekend together each year.

What the Church Offers

Spiritual Formation.

All these skills - musical, personal and social - are learnt in an atmosphere of prayer, worship and spirituality. Choristers are given a basic knowledge of the Christian faith and an understanding of the meaning of Christian discipleship. Many, but by no means all, eventually decide to come forward for confirmation.
